Bottled Butter

Here are the instructions from our October Emergency Preparedness Activity.

All methods need to follow the following preparatory instructions:

  • Wash canning jars.
  • Put canning jars in oven to heat (150 degrees Fahrenheit).
  • Put sealing lids and rings in pan of water on stove and bring to boil.
  • Unwrap all butter you are planning to can.
  • 1 lb of butter will fill up 2-3 half pint jars.

A. Stove Top Method

  • Put 1 lb of butter in pot or double boiler on medium heat and melt.
  • When it begins to boil, keep boiling for 5 minutes stirring frequently to keep from burning.
  • Pour into hot jars, put on lids and let cool.

B. Microwave Method

  • Microwave 1 lb of butter in a glass four quart measuring cup for easy pouring.
  • Microwave about 2-3 minutes until well melted and hot.
  • Pour melted butter into hot jars from oven.
  • Put on lids and let them cool.

C. Oven Method

  • Put chunks of butter into jars before putting the jars in the oven to get hot.
  • Melt some butter on the top of the stove to fill up the jars if not enough is melted in the jars in the oven.
  • Take out of oven and put hot lids on them and let them cool.

All methods need to follow these instructions after jars are filled:

When jars are cool enough to handle, start shaking them to mix the separated butter. Do this about every 5-10 minutes until they are cool enough to put in the refrigerator.

Continue to shake while in the refrigerator every 5-10 minutes until set up.

Remove jars from the refrigerator and store in a cool dry place. Can be stored for 3-5 years unrefrigerated and will not "melt" once opened so can remain unrefrigerated once opened if used fairly soon.

Rancid Butter???

  • If butter goes rancid, you can heat it until they whey separates from the butter.
  • Run a paper towel over the whey to remove it.
  • Let the butter cool down and solidify again.

Uses for This Butter:

  • This butter is great for baking since it is already soft and will not melt once opened.
  • This butter is great on bread and vegetables as it spreads easily.

Thanks for these instructions! Do you know if you can use margarine or does it have to be REAL butter? What a great idea.
